We have a new RCDD in New South Wales

BICSI South Pacific is delighted to inform members that BICSI member Damien Treloar, recently secured his RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) credential. Please join with us in congratulating Damien on this major professional milestone.

Damien informed us that obtaining the RCDD credential had been on his “bucket-list for a long time”, noting it’s significant recognition amongst the ICT community.

Damien is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in the ITEE (Information, Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering) and EE (Electrical Engineering) Colleges, holding an Electrical Engineering degree for over 20 years. His focus on ICT started about 15 years ago, working as a Telecommunications Engineer in Senior and Leadership positions within consultancies, builders/developers and more recently, with technology providers.

His roles in industry over the years include telecommunications and technology master-planner, designer, reviewer, approver and leader across almost all relevant sectors including commercial and enterprise, health, datacentres, rail, roads, critical infrastructure, industrial, precincts, education, government, defence, residential, retail, and financial for new and existing developments. He currently works as the Director of Solution Architecture – Digital across APAC for Johnson Controls.

Reflecting on why he aspired to become an RCDD, Damien told us: “Ever since I was aware of the RCDD credential, I’ve wanted to attain it, as this is known as one of the most respected accreditations in the field of comms infrastructure. This accreditation allows me to officially showcase my own understanding of comms infrastructure, demonstrate my professional commitment to this area and leverage and integrate the knowledge of other professionals around the world.

“I’ve led and supported many technology design projects, and throughout them maintained a particular passion for getting the “foundations right” and as such have focussed on comms and general technology infrastructure. SCS was my primary focus for many years. That said, during this time, I also realised that understanding the other technology elements has allowed me to provide outcomes which are optimised and tailored for a customers’ unique requirements.

Reflecting on the value of the RCDD credential, Damien said: “I’ve long been a supporter of BICSI as a leader in the comms infrastructure space, having been a member for well over 10 years. I recognised long ago that a standard of professionalism from the industry is needed, as even now there is limited understanding in the market of the importance of capable designers both by customers, and even by the design companies themselves.

“Generally speaking, the quality has been low and, as such, inaccurate, inefficient or inappropriate or solutions have been documented and delivered. It is a “specialist” role and not a “default” role which it is too often seen as, but this is changing thankfully.”

Sage words indeed.

And speaking about the journey to secure his RCDD credential, Damien said: “Life and often very long working hours have most definitely got in the way of undertaking this earlier. My list didn’t change but the timing did. I applied for the exam before commencing any focussed study for the exam to “lock-in” my commitment. I invested around 4 months of slow-paced study and last-minute cramming sessions to get here. I’m very glad I did.”
